Apprenticeship Funding

Know your funding options as an Apprentice

When you take time away from working to further your training and education, financial stress is the last thing you should worry about. With over 14,000 apprentices at NAIT, Financial Aid is here to help.

Canada Apprentice Loan

Apprentices can receive up to $4,000 in interest-free loans for each period of technical training through the Canada Apprentice Loan. The funding can be used to cover the costs of tuition, tools, equipment, and living expenses while completing an apprenticeship in a designated Red Seal trade.

Student Aid

Apprentices can apply for Alberta student aid to cover the costs of tuition, supplies, and living expenses while enrolled at NAIT.

Scholarships and Bursaries

NAIT offers support to apprentices through scholarships and bursaries that you can apply for through your MyNAIT portal. The Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry (AIT) Training Board awards more than 1900 scholarships to eligible apprentices and occupational trainees each year.

Employment Insurance

Apply online at Service Canada as soon as you stop working to be considered for Employment Insurance (EI) Benefits. An apprentice reference code will be required by EI to continue your eligibility while in school. The apprenticeship reference code for students is on your enrolment letter from AIT on your MyTradesecrets Profile. Apprentices can call 1-800-248-4823 (in Alberta) or visit Service Canada.

Apprentice Training Award

The Apprentice Training Award is a $1500 (effective September 1, 2020) financial award for registered apprentices who are unemployed in their trade and attending technical training at an approved professional training provider in Alberta.

Apprenticeship Completion Grant

The Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) is a taxable cash grant of $2,000. This Grant helps registered apprentices who have completed their training to become certified journeypersons in designated Red Seal trades.

Apprenticeship Incentive Grant

The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) Is a taxable cash grant of $1,000 per year, up to a maximum of $2,000 available to registered apprentices once they have successfully finished their first or second year/level (or equivalent). This Grant helps registered apprentices in designated Red Seal trades get started.

Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women

The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant for Women is a $3000 grant to further support women in entering, progressing, and completing their training in Red Seal trades where women are underrepresented.

Third Party Sponsorship

If your education is funded by a sponsor other than Provincial Aid or Alberta Works, you will need to follow the Sponsored Students process as noted under NAIT payment options.

Coal and Electricity Transition Tuition Voucher

If you worked in the coal-fired electricity industry and were laid off due to the phase-out, you may be eligible for the Coal and Electricity Transition Tuition Voucher program. If you have a voucher and wish to attend NAIT, please book an appointment with an Advisor in the Student Service Centre (CAT180) to discuss the process.
