Course enrolment FAQs for students
We want to provide students with the following information so they can prepare and make decisions for the year.
Will I need to enrol in my courses? Or will my program enrol me?
Your course enrolment method will depend on your program. Check your My Program view in your MyNAIT portal to know your program's enrolment method. Please note that your enrolment method may be subject to change.
Watch your MyNAIT newsfeed for announcements on your course enrolment method.
What program delivery methods are available?
These are program delivery modes currently being offered:
- In-person: All your class activity will be delivered in person, on campus.
- Online: All your class activity will be delivered online.
- Hybrid: Your program will involve both in person and online learning; however, the delivery mode may vary by class. You must be able to come to campus and also participate remotely online.
- Your choice: Your program offers a variety of class delivery options (in person, online, or a mixture of both) and you can select which type of classes to take. If you wish, you can complete your entire program either in-person or online.
- Varies by Class: Delivery mode varies by class. See Courses and Advanced Credit to view course scheduling details.
- HyFlex: All your classes are delivered for simultaneous participation in person and online. You can choose daily to attend your classes in person or join remotely online.
How will courses be delivered?
We will continue to make course delivery decisions based on careful considerations about how we can safely deliver your courses, while providing you with an exceptional learning experience.
Each course location and delivery method will be listed in your MyNAIT Portal Self Service.
How do I know if my course is online or in-person on campus?
In your MyNAIT Portal Self Service, select the class section to view the class delivery method under the Enrolment Information tab, in Class Notes. You can view more details by selecting the Class Details tab.
- If a course has both online and face-to-face requirements, it will state Blended.
- If a course is delivered in-person on campus, it will be identified as In-person.
- If a course is delivered fully online, it will be identified as either:
- Remote Live Delivery: online class is scheduled at a specific time for students to attend.
- Remote On-Demand Delivery: students can engage with online class content at different times.
- Remote Independent: online learning where content is self-led and no instructor.
- If a course requires a scheduled time at a jobsite or a supervised work environment, it will state Work Placement.
- If a course has a flexible structure where it's optional for students to attend sessions in the classroom, participate online, or do both, it will state Hyflex. Note: this will only be available for a small number of courses.
What if I have student funding?
If you have third party funding and require a confirmation of enrolment, you can request one through your MyNAIT portal after your schedule is built (select Open Self Service > Manage Classes > Confirmation of Enrolment). If you need a letter prior to your enrolment completion due to a funding deadline, you can request a letter by submitting an online Contact Form, select topic: Enrollment/Education Verification, and subcategory: Proposed Confirmation of Enrollment Letter.
If you intend to take your studies part-time or have student funding from another province other than Alberta, please email financialaid@nait.ca to understand how this impacts how you apply for student funding.
After I am enrolled in my courses, can these courses change?
Yes, your schedule and courses may change leading up to the start date of the class. We will try to limit schedule changes but there may be instances where course changes are necessary, for example a change of instructor may cause a course to change. As you continue to prepare, we recommend that you continue to frequently check your schedule in your MyNAIT portal.
Where do I find the drop deadline for a course?
Dropping a class from your schedule before the drop deadline will remove the class and all associated fees from your student record. Drop deadlines vary depending on your class. To view your deadlines for each class, go to your MyNAIT portal and select Open Self Service > Manage Classes > View Classes, click the Enrolment Deadlines button to find your final date to withdraw without penalty.
Dropping a class after the deadline is a withdrawal and is permanently maintained on your academic record.
How many credits do I need to be considered a full-time student?
Please use the full-time course load page to check the number of credits you will need to take each academic term to be considered a full-time student at NAIT.
Please note that Student Aid, scholarships, and other funding agencies may have different definitions of full-time status for eligibility. Refer to funding options for more information.
My program is enrolling me in classes (program-enrolment)
What does program-enrolment mean?
Whether you're a new student or returning student, this means your program will enrol you in your courses for the term. So you don't need to worry about class enrolment. Once your program completes your class enrolment, you will receive an email confirmation.
Check your My Program view in your MyNAIT portal to check your program's course enrolment method (eg. program-enrolment). Your enrolment method may be subject to change.
When will I be able to view my class schedule?
Once your program completes your class enrolment, typically 3-4 weeks after enrolment opens, you will receive an email confirmation stating that you have been enrolled in your classes. Then you will be able to view your class schedule in your MyNAIT Portal.
To view your schedule in your MyNAIT Portal, select Open Self Service, choose Manage Classes, select View my Classes.
What if I want to take a reduced course load?
If you plan to take a reduced course load, please do not drop your courses without first consulting with your program area. Please reach out to your program office before making any changes to your schedule, or if you have questions about your class schedule. Your program's contact information can be found on the homepage of your MyNAIT Portal.
I am responsible for enrolling in classes (self-enrolment)
What does self-enrolment mean?
Whether you're a new student or returning student, this means you are responsible for selecting and enrolling in your classes. Before enrolment opens, you will receive an e-letter in your MyNAIT Portal with your enrolment date, time, and instructions on how to enrol. As course sections can fill up quickly, we recommend you enrol in your classes once enrolment opens.
You can prepare for your enrolment date by reviewing the Self Service Guide on your MyNAIT portal for enrolment options and step-by-step guides on how to enrol in your classes.
When can I enrol in my courses?
Typically, course enrolment is scheduled for early summer. Once enrolment dates are finalized, they will be posted on the Academic Schedule.
Your enrolment e-letter in your MyNAIT portal will include instructions for how to enrol.
How do I enrol in my courses online?
There are a variety of options for how you can enrol in your courses in your MyNAIT portal, including:
- Enrol in Credit Classes: If you know what classes you require, you can enrol by selecting Open Self Service > Manage Classes > Enrol in Credit Classes. For additional support, you can follow this step by step guide (pdf) to enrol.
- Enrol by My Requirements: If you are unsure and want to know what classes you are required to take, please go to Open Self Service > Manage Classes > Enrol by Requirements. Here is a helpful guide (pdf) for you to follow.
- Schedule Planner: For some programs, you may also use the Schedule Planner to enrol in your classes. This is a helpful tool if your program offers multiple class sections to choose from. When using schedule planner, you can follow this step by step guide (pdf).
For more information on course enrolment, please refer to your enrolment e-letter and the Self Service Guide section of your MyNAIT portal.
I am getting an enrolment error message when I try to enrol. What should I do?
You can view the common enrolment errors within the Manage Classes section in MyNAIT Self Service. This list includes what the error means and what to do to correct it.
I was recently accepted to the Academic Upgrading program, but MyNAIT won’t let me enrol?
As a newly accepted Academic Upgrading student, it may take up to 72 hours after you pay your tuition deposit before you can enrol in classes. Please allow for this time if you are receiving an error when you try to choose your courses.
If you are unable to enrol after this timeline, please contact continuingeducation@nait.ca
Please also be aware that each upgrading course will require course-specific prerequisite(s) before enrolments can be completed. Be sure to review the course description to understand which prerequisites are required for each course.
When is the course enrolment deadline?
The course enrolment deadline is the same as the tuition payment deadline. You must both enrol in your classes and pay your outstanding tuition and fees before this deadline.
What happens if I don't enrol by the deadline?
Your admission may be cancelled if you fail to enrol by the enrolment deadline.
- If you are a new student, you will need to submit a new application and pay the application fee.
- If you are a returning student you may be withdrawn from your program, you will need to complete a Request for Readmission in order to continue your studies. Please note that readmission is not guaranteed.
What if the courses I want aren't available?
For some classes, there may be a waitlist available. If you’re using the Schedule Planner, you can include waitlisted classes in your search by changing the 'Course Status' filter to include classes that are full but have a waitlist open.
Whether or not a waitlist is available, we recommend that you frequently review the available course offerings on your MyNAIT portal. If a new class section is added, you will not automatically be enrolled from a waiting list for a different section.
If courses you need to complete your program are full, or if you have questions about alternative courses that may be transferable to complete your schedule, please contact your program directly. Your program's contact is listed on the homepage of your MyNAIT portal.
Can I change my classes after the enrolment deadline?
Yes – once you've enrolled in courses, you can change your schedule on MyNAIT Student Portal until the add/drop deadline.
The swap function is the best way to drop one class in order to add another one. Using swap (instead of the drop and add functions) will drop a course only if the enrolment in the new course is successful. Learn how to swap a course on your MyNAIT Student Portal.
To ensure you get the class schedule you want, select and enrol in your classes as soon as possible since many courses will fill up quickly.
I am an Open Studies student
When can I enrol in Open Studies courses?
How do I know if a course is offered in Open Studies?
We encourage you to browse your program's course-list to see which courses are offered in Open Studies. Each program determines which of their courses will be available, and not all NAIT courses are available for open studies. Once enrolment opens in late July, you will be able to see course availability when you add your courses.
We recommend you review all entrance requirements to ensure you meet them.
What if the course I want is full?
Course enrolment is completed on a first-come, first-served basis, so course availability can change quickly. If your preferred section is full, you may need to pick a new section. We also recommend that you frequently review the available course offerings as new sections may be added throughout the summer.
Certain courses offer the option of joining a waitlist. By adding your name to the waitlist, you will be automatically registered and notified via email if a spot opens up. However, the system will not enroll you if you have a conflicting schedule with another class or if you are already registered in a different section of the same course.
-
If you accept an offer of admission after enrolment has opened for your program, you will need to pay your tuition deposit as soon as possible. You will be able to enrol in courses the day after your tuition deposit is received.
-
Enrolment dates for Open Studies students are not the same as for students admitted to a program. Check with the program office for exact dates.
- It's a good idea to enrol in courses for both the Fall and Winter terms at the same time. You’ll be able to make changes to your schedule up until the add/drop deadline.
