Applying for College and University Transfer Credits

Before you apply  

There are a few things that you need to do before you can apply for transfer credit:

  1. Check your program’s minimum grade and shelf-life requirements for transfer credit. Go to your program webpage, select 'Advanced Credit' to see the minimum grade and when you must have completed the course to be eligible for transfer credits.

  2. Pay your non-refundable tuition deposit. If you’re applying for transfer credits in a NAIT credit program, you must be accepted into the program and pay your tuition deposit before you can apply for transfer credits. Note that transfer credits can only be used to satisfy up to 50% of your program requirements at NAIT. 

  3. Determine the NAIT courses that match your previous courses. The curriculum of the original course must be a minimum of an 80% match to NAIT course outcomes.
    • You can check Transfer Alberta to see which courses at NAIT are equivalent to your previous courses.
    • If you cannot find a match on Transfer Alberta, review the course outlines of the courses you’re required to take in your program at NAIT to determine the best possible fit. To do this, visit your program page, select 'Courses' and click on an individual course to view the course outline.
  4. Gather the course outlines/syllabi. Contact the institution or program where you completed the courses to request a detailed course outline or syllabus from the year that you completed the course. The course outline/syllabus must include information such as the course learning outcomes, assessment methods, grading rubrics, etc.

    • If you completed the courses in another NAIT program, you can find the course outline on the program page, under individual courses in the 'Courses' section.

  5. Submit your official transcript to NAIT, if applicable. If you haven't already submitted an official transcript for the courses for which you’re requesting transfer credit, you must do so. For information on how to submit an official transcript, refer to the Submitting Documents page.

Apply early: If you’re hoping to make changes to your schedule based on transfer credit decisions, make sure you apply for transfer credit early to allow you enough time to receive a decision before the drop deadline. You can apply for transfer credit as soon as you’ve accepted your offer to your program.

Due to high volumes, students should submit their transfer credit application by October 15, 2025 in order to ensure a response prior to the Winter 2026 drop deadline.

How to apply for Transfer Credit

You can apply for transfer credit in the MyNAIT portal. To access the transfer credit application form: 

  1. Log into your MyNAIT portal account. 
  2. Select "Open Self Service" on the right panel.
  3. Select the "Academic Records" tile.
  4. Click on "Transfer Credit" in the left menu, and select "Apply for Transfer Credit."
  5. Complete the steps and carefully follow the instructions in the application to submit your transfer credit application.

Enrolment and refunds

If you will be applying for transfer credit, you can be enrolled in classes to secure your class schedule while you wait for a transfer credit decision. Make sure you apply for transfer credit early to allow enough time for a decision to be made.

If you withdraw from your courses after 12% of the class has been completed,  the tuition amount will not be refunded and you must submit a course withdrawal form (pdf). 

Transfer Credit Assessment Fees

There is a non-refundable $100 fee to assess requests for transfer credit from another recognized post-secondary institution. This fee must be paid within 7 business days after completing the transfer credit application.

  • Transfer Credit from a NAIT program to another NAIT program: 
    No Fee
  • Transfer Credit from any other recognized post-secondary institution:
    $100 Fee (non-refundable)

Transfer Credit Process and Timeline

Timelines may vary depending on application volumes and time of year. Apply for transfer credit as early as possible to avoid delays.
