About ICON

Investment experience for NAIT business students

The ICON Fund, is a student-managed investment fund (SMIF) that was established in 2016  by Finance students and faculty to provide students with real-world experience handling capital, to prepare them for a career in finance.

The  fund provides students with exposure to the world of finance in various industry sectors, first as an analyst and then portfolio manager. Students are given the opportunity to manage a portfolio of stocks and reinvest  earnings in the portfolio, with the goal of creating the largest (by total asset size) Student Money Investment Fund at any polytechnic school in Canada.

Eligibility

Students who participate in the fund are requested to participate for a minimum of two years. The first-year involves serving as an analyst under a portfolio manager, who is typically in their second year of the fund. To enter the fund, students will go through an application and interview process, with recruitment cycles taking place in September and December.

To be considered for ICON, applicants must be:

Third year BBA students who meet the prerequisites and are active on ICON are eligible to register in FNCE4180 (Applied Securities Valuation).

Fund Performance

The ICON  Fund's long term objectives are to exceed the stated portfolio benchmark (S&P/TSX Composite index) and to invest in several assets across multiple asset classes and risk levels, with an initial all-equity Canadian focus.

A yearly annual review of the fund will be used to determine if this objective is met.  Stay tuned for an updated annual report in Spring 2023.
