The Advanced Carpentry Technology diploma is an exciting opportunity to earn the technical and career-ready skills you need to succeed as a carpenter in the construction industry.

This 2-year diploma is an alternative pathway into the carpentry trade without having to be a registered apprentice first, and can also serve as a pathway into apprenticeship and a Journeyperson certification or other construction related careers. In this program, you will focus on theory and hands-on training with the materials and processes required to construct, renovate and repair residential and commercial buildings and structures. You will also have the opportunity to explore new and emerging technologies and systems such as High-Performance Energy Efficient building systems and trade related software.

Upon graduating from the Advanced Carpentry Technology diploma, you can enter the workforce having all apprenticeship technical training completed.

Delivery Mode

  • In-person - All your class activity will be delivered in person, on campus.
  • Online - All your class activity will be delivered online.
  • Hybrid - Your classes will be a mixture of in person and online learning. You must be able to come to campus and participate remotely online.
  • Your choice - Your program offers a variety of class delivery options (in person, online, or a mixture of both) and you can select which type of classes to take. If you wish, you can complete your entire program either in-person or online.
  • HyFlex - All your classes are delivered for simultaneous participation in person and online. You can choose daily to attend your classes in person or join remotely online.

Time

  • Your choice - You can select class times and days that fit your schedule. There are a variety of class options for you to choose from including daytime, evening, weekdays or weekends.
  • No set time - No set class days or times, content is access on-demand. You can complete your studies on your own schedule within the scheduled class dates; may have set due dates and deadlines.
  • Evenings & Weekends - Classes are scheduled after 5 p.m. on weekdays or anytime on weekends.
  • Weekdays - Daytime - Classes are scheduled on weekdays, before 5 p.m.
  • Weekdays - Evening - Classes are scheduled on weekdays, after 5 p.m.
  • Weekends - Classes are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays.

Credit programs that accept international applicants also meet the eligibility for the Post-Graduation Work Permit program, including programs with a Hybrid delivery mode. Each student is responsible for maintaining their eligibility throughout their studies.

What you will learn

In the Advanced Carpentry Technology diploma, you will learn the theory and hands-on training needed to succeed in carpentry and the construction industry. You will gain the technical knowledge and hands-on experience as defined by the Carpenter apprenticeship program, so you can enter the job market with all apprenticeship technical training completed.

Learning outcomes for this program include:

  • The ability to perform calculations and create material estimates for carpentry-related projects.

  • Develop the skills to use and care for tools, materials and processes to create various construction projects.

  • Construct, modify and perform maintenance on residential and commercial construction projects.

  • Demonstrate strong communication skills and the ability to contribute effectively as a team member in a professional environment.

  • The understanding of professional conduct in alignment with workplace expectations, and legislation, regulation and industry standards.

Classes will be held at NAIT’s Main Campus with classroom and lab/shop components presented in-person with online support for review, practice, and evaluation.
