NAIT to launch national clean fuels education and awareness program

Published on July 12, 2023

NAIT will launch a national clean fuels online awareness and education program thanks to a contribution from Natural Resources Canada.

A $300,000 grant will support the creation of a self-paced online training module and a series of webinars focused on increasing awareness of clean fuels and clean fuel technologies for academic, industry and government stakeholders. The online tools will also be available to members of the public.

“This project will create awareness around the carbon footprint of various clean fuels and will help facilitate consumer confidence in and industry adoption of technologies for clean fuel production that have the maximum impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” says Dr. Agatha Ojimelukwe, portfolio manager of NAIT’s Continuing Education Energy and Environment Operations.

The education and awareness program builds upon previous work done by NAIT circular economy and clean technologies applied research. The polytechnic is home to several applied research centers that support the responsible development of clean energy opportunities. Each center provides services and expertise to help reduce, mitigate, or eliminate the negative impacts of energy industry activities.

“Our investment in cleaner technologies is embedded in our applied research practices,” says Dr. Mike Chae, Business Development Lead, of NAIT’s Circular & Clean Technologies Operations. “Now, we will use our research findings and knowledge to create training tools that will generate public awareness of how all Canadians can adopt clean fuels.”

The three webinars will begin to roll out in September 2023 with the first aimed at increasing awareness of the variables that impact carbon intensity of fuels. Additional webinars will be focused on explaining how greenhouse gas calculations are performed and looking at clean fuel case studies that serve as real-world training opportunities. These will be available in December 2023 and March 2024 respectively.

The online training module will equip learners with skills in greenhouse gas calculations, emissions measurement and life-cycle assessment, and will launch in the winter of 2024.

Agatha Ojimelukwe is available for media interviews to talk about the clean fuels’ education and awareness program. Please contact NAIT media relations at media@nait.ca to arrange an interview.
