Medical Transcription

Certificate

This program is not currently accepting applications.

Medical transcriptionists are highly trained language specialists responsible for ensuring patient records are accurate and medical documents are authentic. Every day a new threat to our health, a new disease, a miracle drug or perhaps a drug that has been removed from the market due to side effects is discovered. As a result, the rate at which medical information is produced increases exponentially daily as well.

As a transcriptionist, you play the vital role of telling a patient's story. The electronic health record (EHR) that you create adds to the speed with which other medical specialists can access a patient's medical information. Because it serves as a definitive source of truth, the record must be accurate.

Transcriptionists dictate, re-write, edit and double-check all patient information relayed from doctors and nurses to make sure patients are receiving the correct procedures and medication.

Using voice recognition technology, and talk-to-text programs, transcriptionists can work for a variety of clinics, hospitals and laboratories from the comfort of their home.

Hands-on, industry-relevant training

The 1-year Medical Transcription certificate program will teach you about medical and pharmaceutical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical office procedures and business communications.

You can expect to spend on average:

  • 27 hours per week in classes over the course of a semester
  • 20 hours per week studying outside of class time

The program allows for a blended delivery method for some courses. In these courses, you will have regularly scheduled face-to-face classes as well as structured online course materials and interactive activities that will give you the opportunity to complete your coursework at your own pace.

You will be required to purchase Medical Transcription Client Software, available in-person through the Main Campus shop AT NAIT bookstore, to support your learning.
