The new Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) test has replaced the GED within Canada. This is a credential for adults who do not have a high school diploma and are seeking opportunities such as:

  • employment prospects
  • education pathways
  • training opportunities

Book CAEC Test

To achieve this CAEC high school credential, you must write and pass all five subjects (math, reading, writing, science and social studies). These tests can be taken at different times.

The CAEC test administration guide outlines the policies and procedures of the CAEC Testing Service that offers the CAEC across all participating provinces and territories.

Who is the CAEC for?

This credential is for adults who do not have a high school diploma for employment or educational opportunities.

What will the CAEC cover?

The exams are tailored to the needs of adults and will reflect diverse cultures and perspectives.

There are five separate subject areas that need to be passed to achieve an equivalent diploma:

  • English Reading – 75 min
  • English Writing – 75 min
  • Social Studies – 90 min
  • Science – 90 min
  • Math – 120 min
    • Section 1 – 30 min (No Calculator)
    • Section 2 – 90 min

How to register for a CAEC test

  • Visit the CAEC Site
  • Create a CAEC Candidate Account. You are the only one who will know this.
  • Select Book a test session. Review form.
  • Search and book test. Filter information on left. (NAIT)

On the day of your test

When you arrive for your test, please have valid, government-issued photo ID ready for sign-in. We will walk you through your test details and help set up the computer. Please bring your CAEC login information as no one onsite will be able to provide this to you.

Parking information

Allow yourself ample time to arrive to your assessment booking on time. Students often experience traffic delays en route to NAIT's Main Campus.

How are the tests delivered?

The tests are delivered on an easy-to-use online platform.

How do I study for the CAEC tests?

You can visit the Alberta CAEC website for a sample test.

When should candidates enrol for their exam?

  • Candidates should register as soon as they are able to secure a date that works for them.
  • Review how to videos to create an account and register for test.

What if I need special accommodation?

  • You must make special arrangements prior to taking a test. These can be indicated during registration process using the “Special Arrangements” form in the CAEC digital platform.

How far in advance do I need to submit a cancellation request?

You will need to cancel your request two days or more before the scheduled date.

How do I cancel or transfer my test?

You can cancel or transfer your test date by going into the CAEC Site.

Will I be refunded if I cancel my exam?

There are no refunds. However, we will look to transferring credits to your account or reschedule.

What kind of identification can be shown?

  • Candidates will need to show 2 forms of ID, one with a photo, birthdate, signature.
  • Both cannot be expired.
  • Name & info must exactly match the candidate’s CAEC profile.

How long does it take to receive exam results?

  • The test results for Math, Reading, Science and Social Studies test results will be visible in your CAEC account within two business days of writing.
  • Writing test results will be visible in your CAEC account within 20 business days of writing the test.

What is the passing grade for the CAEC tests?

Each test must have a minimum of 55% to pass the test.

Can I request a re-score if I believe there is an error in my exam results?

You can rewrite each subject test once per calendar month and up to a maximum of 3 times per calendar year. You cannot write a test you have already passed. Each attempt will require you to pay the testing fee.

How much does it cost to take a CAEC test?

CAEC tests are charged at $85.00 per subject. Payment is required at the time of booking.

What calculator can I use for the math test in Part two?

  • You can ONLY use a calculator for the CAEC Math Part II exam.      
  • The following list provides sample approved calculators.
  • TI-30XIIS
  • TI-30Xa
  • CASIO fx-260
  • Casio fx-300 MS Plus 2nd ed.
  • Use of graphing calculators is not permitted, and the following calculator materials, properties and/or configurations are not permitted:
    • programmed memory content.
    • built-in notes, libraries, or formulae (e.g., definitions or explanations in alpha notation).
    • upgraded or downloaded programs.
    • remote communication capability.
    • symbolic manipulation capabilities.
    • manipulate algebraic expressions.
    • external (peripheral) devices and other support materials such as manuals, printed or electronic cards, printers, memory expansion chips or cards, external keyboards
    • Calculator cases are not permitted in the CAEC writing room

What can I take in with me when writing a test?

  • No personal items are allowed on your person while writing. The following items are not permitted:
    • Cell phones, tablets, headphones, earbuds, and other electronics
    • Hats and other head coverings (unless for religious purposes)
    • Coats, scarves
    • Bags and backpacks
    • Books and notes
    • Food and drink (including water)

Where do I write my test?

All tests will be written in room WB 120 in the W Building on main campus. Parking can be found outside that building. There is also parking around L building.
