Four community leaders to receive honorary degrees at NAIT’s 2022 Convocation celebrations

Two outstanding community members, a decorated athlete and an influential radio personality will be recognized for their contributions to their fields and communities with honorary degrees at NAIT’s 2022 Convocation ceremonies, May 5 to 7. 

Kelsey Mitchell - Tokyo 2020 Olympic cycling gold medalist will receive an Honorary Bachelor of Business Administration degree on Thursday, May 5 at 3:00 p.m. via video recording as she is currently out of the country participating in an international cycling event. 

Angela Armstrong - Local entrepreneur and business mentor will receive an Honorary Bachelor of Business Administration degree on Friday, May 6 at 1:30 p.m

Mauro Chies - Interim President and CEO of Alberta Health Services will receive an Honorary Bachelor of Technology degree on Friday, May 6 at 9 a.m. 

Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe – Influential CBC radio personality will receive an Honorary Bachelor of Technology degree on Saturday, May 7 at 1:30 p.m. 

Each honorary degree recipient will address a graduating class at the convocation ceremonies with advice and words of encouragement for students to carry with them throughout their careers.

Kelsey Mitchell (Instrumentation Engineering Technology ’16, Personal Fitness Trainer ’16): Former Ooks women’s soccer student-athlete Kelsey Mitchell became only the second Canadian ever to win a gold medal in women’s sprint track cycling at the 2020 Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan. Her cycling journey began after a long and notable post-secondary career where Mitchell excelled in both the classroom and on the soccer field. Upon committing to cycling in 2017, Mitchell has gone on to win numerous cycling titles and medals including setting a world record at the 2019 Pan American Track Cycling Championships for fastest time in the women’s 200m sprint. She continues to compete nationally and internationally, serving as a role model for aspiring athletes.  

Angela Armstrong: Angela Armstrong has been instrumental in opening doors for Alberta businesses to become more profitable and productive. A well-established entrepreneur based in Edmonton, Armstrong founded her own lease and finance company, Prime Capital Group, where she serves as president. Prime Capital works with businesses from across Canada in need of financial solutions for equipment. Locally, Armstrong is a strong supporter of those seeking to advance their careers through entrepreneurship. She is a long-serving board member of NAIT’s Mawji Centre for New Venture and Student Entrepreneurship supporting business-minded students from across the polytechnic.  

Mauro Chies (Medical Laboratory Technology ’88): Mauro Chies, interim president and CEO of Alberta Health Services (AHS), has dedicated his career to the well-being of Albertans and their families through the provincial health-care system. Chies entered the field as a laboratory technologist at the Royal Alexandra and University of Alberta hospitals, steadily advancing his skills and moving into leadership positions. As a member of the AHS executive leadership team, he was instrumental in planning the Calgary Cancer Centre and the centralized pharmaceutical preparation and distribution centre in Edmonton. Throughout his career, Chies has been an advocate for the advancement of his profession as an integral part of health care in Alberta.  

Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe (Radio and Television - Radio ’00): Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe stands as one of Canada’s leading voices in the celebration and promotion of Black music, including genres such as pop, R&B, soca, hip-hop and funk. She does this each weeknight as the creator and host of The Block, on CBC Music. Tettah-Wayoe has taken on many radio roles in Alberta and Ontario including host and producer of CBC Music Weekend Morning and CBC Music 2 Top 20 in 2016. She has also taken on guest hosting stints with CBC Radio One programs As It Happens and Q. As a talented musician and voice actor, Tetteh-Wayoe served as the Allan Slaight Distinguished Broadcaster-In-Residence at Toronto Metropolitan University from 2017 to 2019. In 2021, she hosted the Juno Opening Night Awards. The Block debuted in February 2021.
