Dr. Paolo Mussone named Ovintiv Applied Research Chair in Energy

Published on November 29, 2021

With 20 years’ experience in industrial innovation, technology commercialization and research in applied chemistry, renewable materials, and environmental science, Mussone brings a wealth of technical knowledge and expertise to the role, created and generously funded by Ovintiv Canada ULC., one of the largest producers of oil and condensate, natural gas and natural gas liquids in North America.

Previously, Mussone was the Research Chair of the Applied BioNanotechnology Industrial Research (ABNIR) program at NAIT, with a mandate to provide technical and scientific expertise to support the development of industry-driven renewable chemical technologies with direct applications in Alberta’s energy sector.

Mussone is passionate about mentoring the next generation of scientists, engineers and technologists, providing applied research opportunities to students aiming to gain hands-on, industry-relevant experience.

As the new Ovintiv Applied Research Chair in Energy, Mussone leads the Clean Technologies Team focused on multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder projects in the emerging circular economy. The team’s emphasis is technology development and validation to transform natural resources and industrial by-products and residual materials into high value chemicals. Mussone will also lead projects in the development and field validation of low-carbon emissions technologies for the remediation of hydrocarbon and salt impacted sites.

Mussone received a PhD in Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science from the University of Manchester in the UK, an MSc in Process Control Engineering and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Milan.

Prior to joining NAIT, Mussone was a process development engineer in the hydrogen, syngas and methanol industrial catalysis team at Haldor Topsoe A/S in Lyngby, Denmark. His academic career includes a postdoctoral fellowship in the Oil Sands Engineering Research group (2007–2009), Research Associate in the Biorefining Conversions and Fermentation Laboratory in the Faculty of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences (2010–2014), and Process Engineering Lead in the Department of Chemical Engineering (2015), at the University of Alberta.
