NAIT will host its first-ever esports tournament bringing teams of players to Main Campus to compete in live-streamed games

EDMONTON – NAIT will host its first-ever esports tournament Saturday, bringing teams of players to Main Campus to compete in live-streamed games of League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

The tournament, organized by Campus Recreation, the NAIT Students Association and two NAIT esports clubs, will also include drop-in, free Xbox and Nintendo Switch gaming stations and a 64-player super Smash Bros Ultimate tournament. Up to eight five-player teams can join the League of Legends tournament and up to 16 two-player teams can participate in CS: GO.

The event is part of a continuing effort to bring non-traditional sports and recreation events to the NAIT community. Teams can be made up of students from NAIT, students from other post-secondary schools, or members of the public.

Global esports revenues are expected to top $1 billion in 2019 from advertising, sponsorships and media rights, with a worldwide audience of 454 million. More than 130 schools in the U.S. and a few in Canada have already established varsity esports teams.
