NAIT students cash in on winning bank designs

NAIT student Isa Villarica wins the ninth annual Architectural Technology design competition

EDMONTON – NAIT student Isa Villarica has won the ninth annual Architectural Technology design competition with her innovative, functional and environmentally sustainable design for a bank branch in the Quarters district.

The contest, sponsored by ATB Financial and Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd., included entries from 79 students in the second year of NAIT’s Architectural Technology program. The finalists and semi-finalists were awarded cash prizes at a reception Wednesday evening at the polytechnic.

This year, students were challenged to design a fictional building in the Quarter district just east of Edmonton’s downtown. The building included a “bank of the future” and an adjacent community space for public use.

Villarica wins a total of $3,000 – $2,000 for her first-place design and $1,000 for the Kasian Award for Design Innovation. Brendan Parnham and Derek Zitkus tied for second place and will each receive $1,250. The other seven finalists, who each receive $500, were Samantha Ansaldo, Airha Caychingco, Kaitlyn Fraser, Kirk Hendren, Mikayla Huculak, Pierre Kho and Leena Nashman.

  • The submissions went through two rounds of judging; in the final round, student provide design boards with images depicting their designs and make PowerPoint presentations to 10 judges.
  • Design entries were judged based on concept, aesthetics, functionality, sustainability and corporate identity.
