NAIT commemorates 30th anniversary of Montreal Massacre

Published on December 06, 2019

EDMONTON –   The 14 victims of the 1989 shooting at the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal were honoured and remembered Friday at NAIT as part of a ceremony marking the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

The event included prayers from elder Kathy Hamelin and the lighting of 14 candles in memory of the women killed when a gunman attacked the Montreal school on Dec. 6, 1989. The names of the victims were read aloud by Laila Goodridge, MLA for Fort McMurray-Lac la Biche, followed by a moment of silent reflection.

The candles were placed on 14 tables draped in black to resemble coffins, each with a photo of one of the murdered women on it, along with her name.

QUOTES
Sandra Marocco, Vice-president Industry Partnerships and Chief Marketing Officer, NAIT

“We want to encourage those in our NAIT community and beyond to promote an environment of respect, support and understanding in all aspects of their lives. It is up to all of us to be part of the conversation, and ultimately, the solution to ending gender-based violence.”

Carrie Vos, department head, Energy Resources and Operations, NAIT
“It is important to remember this day and this senseless act of violence where these young women were singled out and killed for their choice to study engineering. Although this event was 30 years ago, women are still underrepresented in science, technology and engineering.”
