Engineering students to craft rope suspension bridges across Whitemud Creek

Published on September 27, 2019

EDMONTON – Teams of NAIT students and alumni are gearing up for the 46th annual bridge-building competition Saturday.

Several student teams and five corporate teams, each with between 10 and 15 members, will construct rope suspension bridges across Whitemud Creek in Whitemud Park. Each competitor must cross the creek and return before the bridges are dismantled. In one crossing, the teams will simulate saving an injured colleague. The team that finishes in the shortest time wins the event.

Competitors include students from the Construction Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology and Engineering Design Technology programs, along with Clark Builders, Jen-Col Construction, Filmore Construction Management, PCL and Synergy Projects.

This is a fast-paced, dramatic race and the competition is fierce. Each team will also donate 75 pounds of food to the Edmonton Food Bank.
