NAIT community collects warm clothing for people in need

Share the Warmth campaign is a festive season tradition for NAIT staff and students

EDMONTON – The NAIT community will collect more than 2,000 items of warm clothing for the less fortunate this season – part of an annual winter tradition at the polytechnic for more than a decade.
Retired instructor Gordon Smith started the ‘Sock It To Me Brother’ campaign years ago, organizing a year-long collection of socks. The NAIT Academic Staff Association (NASA) took over the campaign 11 years ago and renamed it Share the Warmth, expanding the campaign to include new gloves, toques, scarves, and personal hygiene items.
Over the past decade, the campaign has collected more than 25,000 items and $25,000 for Edmonton charities, thanks to the generosity of NAIT staff, students and the community.
This year, more than 1,000 pieces of warm clothing and three large boxes of personal hygiene items have already been donated and delivered to the Boyle McCauley Health Centre, Bissell Centre, Hope Mission and the Elizabeth Fry Society of Edmonton. Another 1,000-plus items will be delivered Dec. 19 and 20 by staff from NAIT Distribution. Share the Warmth is supported by MBS Insurance Brokers Ltd. and Economical Insurance.

Media are invited to meet the team, including Smith, and see the impressive amount of warm clothing that will be donated.
