Presidential job profile survey results

In early October, staff, students and stakeholders were invited to provide input about the leadership competencies (knowledge, skills and abilities) and personal attributes they believe would be important as we prepare to select our next president and CEO. Feedback is being considered as the job profile used in the search is being finalized.

In the 2-week survey period, we had 315 completed responses, with a majority of responses coming from three groups: employees (75%), current students (13%), and alumni (6%).

Here is a high-level summary of the survey results.

Experience

  • 90% of respondents feel it is moderately (24.1%), very (31.8%), or extremely (34.1%) important for a candidate to have academic leadership experience.
  • The minimum level of academic leadership experience respondents feel is required is:
    • dean: 30.3%
    • vice-president: 28.3%
    • associate vice-president: 16%
    • program chair: 10.4%
    • president: 6.8%
    • other (variety of responses): 8.1%
  • 81% of respondents feel it is moderately (32.8%), very (29.3%), or extremely (19%) important for a candidate to have experience in a polytechnic environment.
  • 71.6% of respondents feel it is moderately (35%), very (24.1%), or extremely (12.5%) important for a candidate to have executive-level experience (e.g. president, vice-president, CEO) in sectors and industries outside of education.

Leadership Competencies

The top 5 leadership competencies that respondents feel are most important for a president and CEO to have are:

  1. Effective communication (68%)
  2. Building and maintaining relationships (66%)
  3. Leading people (58%)
  4. Setting vision and goals (55%)
  5. Thinking and acting strategically (52%)

Personal Attributes

The top 5 attributes that respondents feel are most important for a president and CEO to have are:

  1. Honesty and integrity (84%)
  2. Accountability (61%)
  3. Ability to inspire others (55%)
  4. Commitment and passion (54%)
  5. Respectful (51%)
