RBC Foundation support helps students to thrive in the workforce
Employers are looking for new graduates who can bring more than just technical know-how to work.
New hires who come armed with strong “soft skills,” such as communication and teamwork, are highly valued in the workplace. Yet Canadian employers report these skills are too often lacking in recent graduates.
RBC Foundation has come on board to help NAIT with a project that aims to address this skills gap.
Together, they will ensure that students across NAIT have the opportunity to learn and practice career-enabling skills — including communication, professionalism, collaboration and problem solving — before they graduate.
Fostering outstanding careers
“These skills will not just help graduates to get jobs, but they will prepare them to progress and advance throughout their careers,” says alison lewis, NAIT’s associate vice-president of Campus Life.
Providing this dedicated training to develop career-enabling skills will go a long way to helping NAIT deliver on its promise to provide students with the foundation for successful careers, she adds.
Having access to this training also prepares students to be adaptable when what lies ahead for their industries is uncertain. “When their jobs shift, they will be able to shift along with it.”

For RBC, the partnership is a natural fit and part of a broader commitment to helping young Canadians thrive.

Learning how to work
Students across all programs will start learning from the new career-enabling skills training in 2019. Support from RBC Foundation allowed NAIT to hire a dedicated teaching and learning specialist for the project. Curriculum is already being developed as are plans for how to integrate learning into programs.
As the project unfolds, those closely involved are excited for the value that it will bring, says lewis.
