NAIT’s Academic Upgrading program is a preparatory pathway designed for adults from various academic backgrounds to gain prerequisites and entrance requirements needed for post-secondary career study. Once accepted into the program, students have the flexibility to choose specific courses that they require for upgrading.

Upon successful completion of our Academic Upgrading program, you will be eligible for conditional acceptance into NAIT credit programs, pending successful completion of all other entrance requirements.

Upgrading courses taken at NAIT can be used for admission requirements to a NAIT career program or other Alberta post-secondary institutions.

Credit programs that accept international applicants, including programs with a Hybrid delivery mode, meet the eligibility requirements for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program, as long as they meet the field of study requirement or award a bachelor’s degree. Each student is responsible for maintaining their PGWP eligibility throughout their studies. Learn more by checking the International Applicants tab below.

Terms and delivery options

The majority of upgrading courses are held during the day and with an instructor leading the class. Courses are delivered on-campus or online – synchronously during the week. We do not have weekend classes.

  • Fall term: September to mid-December (15 weeks in total). On-campus day, evening or online synchronous delivery.
  • Winter term:  January to end of April (15 weeks in total). On-campus day, evening or online synchronous delivery.
  • Spring term:  May to end of July (courses are condensed and move at a rapid pace in this 12-week term). On-campus day and online synchronous delivery only.

Courses and course schedule

  • Students can take 1 – 3 courses pending scheduled times.
  • Two courses in a term is considered full-time studies for this program.

Tuition and fees

It’s important to plan your tuition and finances. Tuition deadline dates are posted in your MyNAIT student portal for the term of studies.

Full fees will need to be paid by the deadline, no matter who is paying, or you will be cancelled.

Funding options

  • Funding is available to upgrading students who qualify.
  • Investigate your eligibility and how to apply on the ESL and Academic Upgrading Funding webpage.
  • Being enroled in two upgrading courses per term will qualify you for full-time funding eligibility through the Foundational Learning Assistance Program.
  • Academic Upgrading students are not eligible for student loans.
  • Students relying on funding must be prepared to pay for courses in full by the tuition deadline, as funding will need time for processing.
  • If you are being sponsored other than through Foundational Learning Assistance Program funding, the company will have to complete the Third Party Sponsorship degree, diploma and certificate form and submit.

Minimum technology requirements

All learners must have regular access to technology. A laptop with the following capabilities is:

  • have a camera & microphone
  • have adequate bandwidth/ internet access.
  • Have a portable device to take to class
  • support MS Teams and LMS (Brightspace)

When do applications open?

Can I use these courses to get into another school?

Yes, our upgrading courses follow 80% or greater of the Alberta Education curriculum.

Our program is identified as equivalent within Transfer Alberta.

Can I take any class I want?

No. Many of the classes require prerequisite courses with a pass mark. See our prerequisite chart for details.

If you do not have the prerequisite, you can take the Academic Upgrading Placement Test at your cost. 

I was recently accepted into the program, why am I having trouble enroling on MyNAIT?

As a newly accepted Academic Upgrading student, it may take up to 72 hours after you pay your tuition deposit before you can enrol in classes. Please allow for this time if you are receiving an error when you try to choose your courses.

Be aware that each upgrading course will require course-specific prerequisite(s) before enrolments can be completed. Be sure to review the course description to understand which prerequisites are required for each course.

How do I know if a course is online or in-person on campus?

In your MyNAIT Portal Self Service, select the class section to view the class delivery method under the Enrolment Information tab, in Class Notes. You can view more details by selecting the Class Details tab.

  • In-person (A0): If a course is delivered in-person on campus.
  • Remote Live Delivery (OA0): online class is scheduled with an instructor at a specific time for students to attend.
  • Remote On-Demand Delivery (O0): This online learning is best for students who are looking for flexibility and self-paced. Students choose what times work best for them to complete their online coursework and meet published deadlines with instructor supports.

Do I have to attend my online classes live as they are scheduled?

Yes. Important lecture information delivered by the instructor in online classes will enhance and support learning.

Class lectures are recorded, but not necessarily the whole class delivery.

Can I take Open Studies courses?

Academic Upgrading only has a select few courses you can take as an Open Studies student. They are Math10C, Science 10, Biology 20 and Biology 30.

You do not have to complete an online application if you take one of the listed courses above. Full tuition fees must be paid within 24 hours of enrolment.

What if I'm a mature student?

The Academic Upgrading program will require proof for admission and all course specific prerequisites. For further information, go to the How to Enrol tab.

I have a physical or learning disability, can I get accommodations?

Yes, our Learning Services area offers many resources to help students.

You will need to book an appointment to meet with a Learning Advisor. You must be accepted into the program before scheduling an appointment.

Is there a course I can take to improve my math skills? 

Math Skills Booster is a course designed to help those who want to revisit essential math concepts like arithmetic, fractions and percentages to regain confidence in fundamental mathematics.

Before Applying

  • Review the information for the course(s) you want to study. 
  • Note that a GED/CAEC grades will not be accepted for the entrance requirement or for required course prerequisite.

  • This program will be offering PALS. International applicants can visit this webpage for further information on PALs before or after applying to the program. For applicants that have applied, they will also receive direction on when they will get their PAL in their letter of acceptance.

Transcripts

If you studied in an Alberta high school, you do not need to submit transcripts for admission.

If you studied outside of Alberta, click on the drop downs below for details on submitting high school transcripts.

Studied in a Canadian province outside of Alberta

If you studied in high school outside of Alberta, Canada, you will need to submit high school transcripts with your application online; if you do not have them, you can take a placement test before you submit an application. 

Be sure to look up your high school course equivalencies prior to applying.

Studied outside of Canada (International Student)

If you studied at a school outside of Canada, you would need to submit your transcripts and educational documents so NAIT can fully assess your application. Be sure to check the document requirements by country.

How to Enrol

When can I enrol in courses?

  • You can enrol in courses once you have been accepted into the program and the deposit is paid. 
  • Check your course enrolment method in your My Program view in MyNAIT. If your program is listed as self-enrol, you will need to enrol in your courses online by the deadline listed above. 
  • If you accept an offer of admission after the enrolment deadline, then you must enrol in your classes within 24 hours of acceptance.

How do I enrol in courses after being accepted?

  • If you know what classes you require, you can enrol in your MyNAIT Portal by selecting Open Self Service > Manage Classes > Enrol in Credit Classes. 
  • Depending on where your official transcripts are from, course equivalency and transfer credit posting for self–enrolment can take 24–72 hours to successfully complete course enrolments.

Placement test results, Open Studies, or other career program students will not be able to enrol into grade 11 or 12 course levels. You will have to email continuingeducation@nait.ca for program permission.

International Applicants

This program accepts international students.

PGWP Eligibility

This program does not meet eligibility criteria for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), following Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) field of study requirement. Students who applied for a study permit before November 1, 2024, are not affected by the new field of study rule and may be eligible for a PGWP.

While graduates are currently ineligible to apply for a PGWP, NAIT still welcomes international students to this program to gain valuable knowledge and skills to pursue your career goals, whether in Canada under another type of permit or in your home country or other international markets.
