Dr. Paolo Mussone named Applied Bio/Nanotechnology Industrial Research chair

Published on December 15, 2015

Dr. Paolo Mussone has been appointed Applied Bio/Nanotechnology Industrial Research chair, a new position within NAIT’s School of Sustainable Building and Environmental Management.

Working closely with industry partners in the resource extraction, environmental remediation and bioeconomy sectors, and in collaboration with other post-secondary institutions and research centres across Alberta, Mussone is focused on developing and prototyping marketable technology using emerging nano- and biotechnologies. This applied research will support the regional energy sector with the goal of improving operational efficiencies, reducing emissions and accelerating environmental remediation.

Prior to coming to NAIT, Mussone was a processing engineering team lead at Ingenuity Lab, a partnership between the University of Alberta, Alberta Innovates Technology Futures and the National Research Council of Canada.

Mussone has a PhD in Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science from the University of Manchester in the UK, a Master of Science in Process Control Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Milan and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Milan.

QUOTES

Dr. Forrest Tittle, dean of the School of Sustainable Building and Environmental Management
“We’re excited to have Paolo at NAIT. He brings to the position the trained eye of a researcher and broad exposure to opportunities that are out there in a variety of fields. The chair will identify opportunities that are not currently being pursued and will have an immediate impact on industry.”

Dr. Chris Dambrowitz, NAIT associate vice-president research and innovation
“Paolo’s personal approach has already contributed to a collaborative spirit across research centres in Edmonton and beyond. His particular background as an engineer with a deep understanding of the resource sector, as well as the fields of biotechnology and nanotechnology, will be a tremendous asset to NAIT. We’re happy to have him as part of the team.”

Dr. Paolo Mussone, Applied Bio/Nanotechnology Industrial Research Chair
“NAIT is uniquely positioned to take discovery-level knowledge from the research bench and translate it to real-world opportunities. This Chair is industry focused and industry driven, with an overall goal to reduce the environmental footprint of the resource extraction sector in Alberta and more broadly in Canada. I will actively pursue outcome-focused opportunities to work with other post-secondary institutions and researchers in Alberta on developing these technologies.”
